What the Beck???

Kentucky Trip #3

It is now Wednesday, and I am entering Crofton, Kentucky.

Some fun facts to know and share about Crofton, Kentucky

Population 762 in 2013
10 – 19 volunteer firefighters
1 police officers (2008)
crime rate:  164.7

I drove around the town, and just wasn’t interested in it at all.  This one is just too small for me.  I do have another small town, but that one spoke to me.

There is no more to say……..I am outta here!

Leitchfield, Kentucky here I come.

Some fun facts to know and share about Leitchfield, Kentucky

Population 6,827 (2013)
Grayson County
2 full time firefighters, the rest are volunteers
13 police officers + administrator
crime rate:  159.5

I had a rough time in this city.  In fact, I actually dubbed this HELL DAY!!

I began at City Hall.  The ladies who worked there were so wonderful. I had a problem as I pulled into town.

HELL INCIDENT #1
My rental car wouldn’t shift gears.  I was staying in first, and beginning to panic.  The secretaries suggested that I call Hertz. The Hertz employee on the phone saved me!  Somehow, I had shifted into manual, so it stayed in the lowest gear.  Thank God!  Hallelujah! This had potential to ruin my trip. My blood pressure can now return to normal.

I was now off to the police station. The Assistant Chief was very informative and reviewed and verified my statistics. He also gave me a lot of background about the town.

The town has a city square, which took a little getting used to because traffic enters and leaves the square as others are moving all around it.  There was a lot of merging!  There was not a lot to do here, and they really didn’t have a lot of restaurants to choose from for lunch.  I wasn’t hungry so I decided to check out the properties.

It sits back off the road in the country on a private farm making this home very private but close to town. The main level rooms include a mud room, kitchen with walk in pantry, dining room, breakfast nook, living room, foyer, 3 large bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, office, and a large laundry room that is conveniently located across from the bedrooms. There is 4,000 sq. ft., and it sits on 2 acres. The basement includes an extra large bedroom, office, family room, full bathroom, extra large recreation room, and storage room. This home also has hand scraped hardwood flooring, a tile walk in shower located in master bathroom and a 2 car attached garage. This home is only 7 years old and is a MUST SEE!

 HELL INCIDENT #2
This property is way, way, way down a gravel drive. A cornfield sits in front and on the side of the house, so it is not even seen from the road during the spring, summer, and fall. The incident began when I realized that I was coming to the house. I hate to invade anyone’s privacy, so I thought I would do a quick little turnaround and head out. My brain was not in gear, because I was barely off the drive when my front tires sunk in the mud. Where was I?  Georgia?? I freaked out.
There was no one home, and I was barely visible from the road, and I didn’t know anyone. I did what any self respecting girl did – I called the police. I told her that I was barely off the drive, so I didn’t need a tow truck – just a strong man. She laughed, and then sent me a County Police Officer. He came, couldn’t get it out, didn’t want a tow truck either, and called in reinforcements. The county Chief arrived. He asked if I was planning to rob the house, so I shared my town research. He was impressed – thank God! They both pushed me out. They were my heroes. Of course, I took their picture. Blood pressure was up, down, up, down. Lord, help me – this was a stress-filled day.

I wasn't that far off the drive.

 I am so darn stuck!
 My heroes!

Lrg back deck for entertaining or relaxing while enjoying the gorgeous country view, barn with water, electric, 9 horse stalls, tack room and chicken coop, pond for livestock. A built in generator. A must see all this home has to offer.

This home looks great, but it is really high up and mountainous. The Zillo photos look must better than my drenched photos.

I went to a few more homes, but they were a big no.

Look at these photos.  I love signs that say, “Falling Rock”.  YIKES!! With my luck today, one will fall right on my rental car.

I was off to Elizabethtown to check in at the Hampton.

Hell Event #3
I got to the Hampton and checked in at the front desk. I went back to the car to unpack, and couldn’t find my car key.  PANIC TIME #3.  I was tired of feeling panic. So, for the second time that day I called Hertz. He said he could send someone, but it would cost me $85.00 for the locksmith.  At that time, money was not an issue. As I was on hold, I found the key in the lining of my coat. He said the charge was cancelled. OMG - how much stress can I handle. Give me food and a bed.
I was now starving so I walked in the rain/snow to Ruby Tuesday’s and ate dinner.

Today, I must say STUNK!  However, tomorrow is another day and maybe the sun will come out, and I will have the rest of my trip be UNEVENTFUL!!!

What the Beck???

Trip to Kentucky #3 continued
 Mayfield, KY

 Downtown Mayfield

I felt better about the town once I saw
the buildings, unlike the rundown homes.

The town does have a "Randall Road" section
with all of the fast food restaurants, etc.

The antique store section

I wanted to start with a store called A Walk in the Clouds, because I liked the name, but it was closed.  Not a good start!  I located Outfitters Connection, and it was a great store. It carried items like coveralls, work boots, etc.  The clothes are extremely well made, and they are perfect clothes for working outside.

The next store was by far my favorite in the town. Sissy & Me is a fabulous boutique.

The owner was very nice, and she had named the store after her two daughters. Sissy was in middle school or early high school, and Me was in fifth grade. I cannot for the life of me remember her real name.
I bought a signature necklace. The brand name is GingerSnaps. My necklace has five snaps on it that can be changed or additional snaps can be purchased.  I bought the necklace and a total of seven snaps.  The booklet that was given to me has hundreds of snaps to choose from.  I love it!!! You need to find it on line and buy it!

Beginning on the left, every other one is called
a snap, and can be changed.  You could recreate
a new necklace every time you wore it if you
bought more snaps.

Here are the two extra snaps that I bought,
but there were hundreds more to choose from
in the catalog.

I changed the middle snap, but I could have
changed any one of the five in the necklace.

This store would be perfect for Jenny
Anderson or my niece, Molly. You two would
go wild in this amazing boutique.

I was now back on Broadway Street and went to the antique stores. One of the stores was called Mayberry Antiques.

 This store was great!

I loved this store, partially because of the name, and also because I found a beautiful antique table runner.  The only thing that would have made this store better would have been if Andy, Barney, and Aunt Bea were working there.

Here is the runner I bought.
 I hadn't ironed it yet.

Here is a closeup of the lace edging

On the way out of town, I saw this restaurant, which me made smile.  Loved the name!!!

On the next blog installment I will share all of the information about the Mayfield properties I read about, and then visited from Zillo.

What the Beck???

Kentucky Trip #3

I decided to make another trip to Kentucky since the weather was supposed to be great.  I began my trip by heading to Mayfield, Kentucky, which is straight south on the western edge of the state. I headed down Route 57.

I have no idea why this cross was on the side of the road, because I couldn’t see a church, cemetery, or anything else from my viewpoint. It was on heck of a big cross, however.

I was really excited to visit Mayfield, because it had the best pieces of land on Zillo of all of the 20 towns I was visiting this year. As I entered the town of Mayfield, I was not feeling good about the economic neighborhood that I was driving through to reach City Hall. It seemed much more like a rough neighborhood in Aurora rather than St. Charles.

I think they subdivided this one beautiful home into apartments.

 Boarded up and sad

This home had the possibility to be a grand
home, but it was in such disrepair. At
this time, I was a little worried about the town.

City Hall, and the Police and Fire Stations were very nice. Gordon Alter was the greeter as well as a fountain of knowledge about the materials available about the town.

Gordon Alter, a very nice man!

Gordon allowed to me take 19 brochures that would be helpful if I moved to this town. He also gave me his photo book yellow pages, so I had total access to what was located in the town.  I loved this man.
The brochures included info. about the senior center (gosh – that is a scary thought), the YMCA workouts, the nearby university (where I could teach part-time), being a CASA volunteer, Kentucky flood plain info., recycling, events and festivals, the library, barn quilts (which are quilt patterns painted on the side of a barn), and a city map.  Whew!!  There were a few more, but that gives you an idea.  Now, I had a lot of reading to do!  My favorite pamphlet was called “Want to make a difference in Mayfield?”  It lists activities that citizens can do to make Mayfield a better place!!!  I LOVE THAT IDEA!
         Thank you, Gordon Alter.

The next public servant I spoke with was the administrator for both the police and fire departments. Clarissa Yarker loves this town, but was surprised that I would move so far away from home.

Clarissa Tarker, a true cheerleader for
the town of Mayfield, Kentucky.

Clarissa checked my research about the population, number of firefighters and the crime rate. Mayfield has a relatively low crime rate of 124.3.  To give a base for comparison – St. Charles has a rate of 84.6. I asked her what the police force's biggest issue was now, and she said it was retail theft. In 2012, there were 98 thefts. I was actually relieved because the answer in most towns in drug related.  How refreshing.
Mayfield is a “DRY CITY.” I believe the ordinance passed, so they could serve alcohol in a restaurant, now. What year is it???

I then spoke with the mayor’s secretary. She was lovely. While in her office, a young man came in to sell raffle tickets to raise money for his Dad, who had throat cancer. Of course, I bought a five dollar ticket, and handed it to the secretary as a gift. They were raffling off a long rifle. Yes Dorothy, you are not in Kansas anymore!  Yikes!!! A rifle – who knew??????

It was late and I was starving, so I went to Carr’s Steakhouse on West Broadway.

I ordered their brisket, which was very good and filling.  I must CONFESS that it pales next to Ree Drummond’s. This was surprising, since it was their specialty.

Now, it was time to hit the stores and talk to the local people of the town. Coming soon.
