Week 49 Sunday (12/21/14)

Recipe Review
Today’s Recipe and Location:           Tuscan Bean Soup with Shrimp
Found in: The Pioneer Woman blog

If you like a hearty soup, then this one is the meal for you. Ree uses fresh wonderful ingredients and strong flavors. She uses Northern beans to add some substance. I like the idea of shrimp in soup. Most soups have chicken or beef, so to me that makes this one unique. A great recipe for Illinoians in the winter months.

Trivial Triffles

Can a toe be a trivial triffle?  I’ve decided that this poor little, discolored broken toe is today. Since I took the day off yesterday to feel sorry for myself, I thought the least I could do is to show you the sad, little pitiful thing.  It almost has a full rainbow of color. I must say that one of the biggest drags was having to wearing Crocs to the grocery story today. They make my feet like giants, but they are the only shoes I own that do not hurt.
The only upside is that you can see the pedicure I had done an hour before the “accident.”  Another day….another broken bone.

Swollen and puffy

Yikes, even the foot is green

The pedicure looks great, however

Memory Musings

Since I broke my toe this week, it reminded me of when I fractured both ankles about 15 years ago. That was a major accident for me.
On Black Friday, I was supposed to take my Mom to a doctor’s appointment. I arrived at her condo a little early. Mom’s condo was on the second floor of the building. She had a long concrete staircase going up from the driveway. I let her know that I had arrived, and would wait in the car.
As I stepped off of the final step, it happened. Unbeknownst to me the blacktopped driveway had dropped a few inches where it met the concrete. It was not visible because the area was full of leaves. My left ankle snapped when that foot was half on and half off the decline, and I began to fall. The right ankle came down hard on the concrete slab. The right ankle was actually in worse shape.
Mom came out and I yelled for her to call an ambulance. I knew what had happened. Needless to say, I was one unhappy camper. Mom and I have a funny dynamic that happens when I get hurt. I get mad and she laughs. She asked why I was mad, and I told her it was the first time I actually wanted to shop on Black Friday. She found this funny, and went back into the house to stop the laughter. We always relive these encounters and laugh about them.
Needless to say, I was taken to the hospital where I had to spend a few days until I could be casted. Unfortunately, many doctors leave during the holidays. The other problem was that I couldn’t be discharged until I had a booted foot able to stand on the floor.
I was out of school from Thanksgiving break until after Christmas. I was still unable to drive until February. This was a very hard time for me, because I found out how much I hate being dependent on others. My wonderful aunts cleaned my home. My nieces helped with the dogs, and my Mom was so helpful with medical advice. The parents of Munhall School delivered dinner and other foods every day that I was home, promptly at 5:30 p.m. When I did return, our school secretary, Jan McLaughlin, picked me up and brought me home every day from school. A dear friend, Ruth Verbel, subbed for me the entire time I was out. The kindness of all of these people was overwhelming, and yet joyful.
Wow, that was strange to revisit that time. For some reason a little broken toe now seems such a joke.

Week 49 Friday (12/19/14)

I had the flu yesterday, so this is the best I can do today.

Merry Christmas!

What the heck?
Diane and I have "camera eye" issues

Susan looks like she is launching into song

I'm scaring myself - I look mad (and I wasn't)

This is a keeper

Apparently I didn't follow directions,
but I did find them funny!

Week 49 Thursday (12/18/14)

                       What the Beck?

Today’s photos are of the next generation: my great-nephews.

Nicholas is the oldest of my great nephews.
He is frequently quiet and reflective and a great hugger.
Here is his with my Mom, his great grandmother.

Let's open the presents!

This pirate has just opened my present to him, a Transformer.

He truly loved the pirate "stuff".

Uncle Shane is trying to get his sword.

Next, comes Colton ....
Colton and Dad share a moment

I love this picture of Colton and his Aunt Rachel

Colton begins ripping off the paper as cousin,
Wyatt, watches his technique.

The boys are all busy with the presents
in Kim and Greg's living room this year

This is one of my favorite pictures of Colton.
It was taken at least a year ago, and has been my screen saver
ever since. Colton has eyes that take your breath.

The final great nephew is one year old Wyatt.

Wyatt gets help from Dad, Tim,
in opening this year's present

This is one of my favorite photos of Wyatt.
I love this baptism picture.

He is such a happy little boy.
He loves balloons, running, and his Grandpa.

This is the intellectual Wyatt - college bound.
I am a proud Godmother.

Random Reflections

I was reading April 2014’s O Magazine when I read an article written by Brene’ Brown. After reading this article, I sat there thinking about my behavior and that of those I know. Brown stated that we all judge people a lot, which is a waste of time. She said that we need to examine “WHY” we feel the need to be so judgmental. What are we getting out of it? I thought this was important to look at myself and try to be less judgmental of others. The first step is to be mindful of where I am coming from while judging others. I love it when I read an article that helps me improve myself.

Irksome Ideas and Images
As a teacher, one of my pet peeves is when kids dog ear a page in a book. Doesn’t everyone know that that is what bookmarks are for?  I personally love Post-It flags. They are smaller and stay where they are put. So if you are one of those bend the page down people, invest in a bookmark please.

SPECIAL EVENT: FAMILY CHRISTMAS

Today, I am introducing Diane’s family to the world. Diane is my youngest sister.

Diane, last Christmas at my house.

I love this picture of Diane and her youngest
daughter, Rachel, at Alaina's wedding.

Matthew, Diane's only son,
and Heather also attended the wedding

Molly is Diane's oldest daughter. She and Bryan are
getting married next summer.
Welcome to this crazy family Bryan.

This little fireball is Rachel, the youngest
of all of my nieces and nephews.

Tomorrow, the pictures will be of the sweetest children, my three great nephews.

Gabbin’ About Gratitude

I am so grateful for being able to laugh with friends. One of the joys of the holiday season is laughing with Donna and her family. I always have a wonderful time and the laugher flows. The atmosphere is laid back and calming with no pressure or stress. That is the ticket to a wonderful holiday for this girl.

Week 49 Tuesday (12/16/14)

Happy Birthday Kim!  I am so disappointed that I do not have pictures to share. Apparently, I need to focus on Kim and take some photos. I love the photo with Susan below.

Special Entry - Family Christmas

I forgot to mention yesterday that on Thursday the focus will be on my great nephews. I did not focus on them with their individual families.
Today, I will introduce my sister, Susan’s wonderful family.

I love this picture of Susan and Kim, my wonderful sisters

Rick and Susan at their daughter, Alaina's wedding

Every time I see this picture I smile. Alaina was radiant
at her wedding, and her father looks so happy!

On the left is Shane, my oldest nephew, and Susan's
son, having a cousin moment with Wesley

This is Josie, Shane's girlfriend. She is a peach!

This would have been a great photo if I
focused better. Tim is Alaina's husband, and the father
of my great nephew, Wyatt
A truly great guy

Week 49 Monday (12/15/14)

SPECIAL EVENT: FAMILY CHRISTMAS

Yesterday, Saturday the 13,th was our family Christmas. We moved the large family Christmas to another day, because my married nieces and nephews had two or three houses to go to on Christmas Day. We only had maybe an hour or two when everyone was present. It always seemed like someone was in a hurry to leave, so I suggested two years ago, that we move our Christmas to another day, so we can have everyone stay the entire time.
We had such a wonderful day and everyone came. I love spending time with all three of my sisters and their growing families. Having three great nephews there, made it joyful. Their excitement brought back the true spirit of Christmas.
Unfortunately, I don’t have pictures of everyone from yesterday, so I will substitute pictures so you can see the entire family. Today, I will focus on my Mom and Ron, and Kim’s family. Susan’s family will be on tomorrow’s blog, and Diane’s will appear on Wednesday.

Here are Mom and Ron. We were so blessed to
have them with us this Christmas.

Mom and Ron

I can’t imagine my life without my Mom and Ron. We talk several times a week and Mom really enjoyed her time with her family this weekend. It is special when we all get together.

One of the joys of this season is seeing my
Mom with her three great-grandsons
(L to R:  Wyatt Erd, Colton Mendel, and Nicholas Lehman)
Greg has been in our family over 35 years,
and is married to Kim. He is a true brother.

Apparently, I didn't take any pictures this year of the adults.
This is Kim with her grandson, Nick two years ago.

Cory is Kim's oldest son.
Here, he is at the summer picnic.

Brandy, Cory's wife, a few
years ago with her son, Nick
She may look familiar because she was
originally a critic for Ree's food.

This is my favorite picture of Kim's second
son, Wesley, at his cousin Alaina's wedding.

Lindsey, is Wesley's wife and the
newest addition to our family.

Maddie (in yellow), is Kim's youngest and my Godchild.

Wants and Wishes

My family and I want to
wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
